Next up in our series of chats with Football Fanzone & Talksport’s Jason Cundy is Arsenal. The North London side showed last season that they may have finally turned a corner winning away against rivals, Man City and Man United.
To add to that Arsene Wenger finally broke his duck against Jose Mourinho, beating the Portuguese manager in the Community Shield last weekend.
It’s been a long time coming but are Arsenal finally ready to win the title?
For me whilst Arsenal are title contenders, they are still 1 or 2 players away from being a real threat.
They still need a striker, although they have been linked with Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema as well as a holding midfielder.
Francis Coquelin has been earning rave reviews but having been at Arsenal for 7 years, a 6 month spell of decent performance isn’t enough to convince me that he is the answer.
They, like everyone in the Top 4, are 1 injury away from ruin. If Chelsea lose Costa, United lose Rooney, City lose Aguero they face problems and Arsenal are in a similar position with Koscielny.
We all know Arsenal have struggled with injuries, case in point Jack Wilshere who is set to miss the start of the season after an injury sustained in training, so their injury record also leaves me skeptical as to whether they can maintain a title challenge.
Arsene Wenger showed that he can adapt to combat different opponents last season but can he do it for the whole season? Arsenal are very comfortable beting the smaller teams and winning when the pressure is off (accounts for their Commnity Shield win!), but when the pressure is on it’s a different matter.
The biggest compliment I can pay them is that they are Chelsea’s biggest rivals for the title, but I just don’t quite think they are there yet.
