News that PSG’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic would consider a move to Old Trafford was met with joy by Manchester United fans, with the talismanic Swede available on a free in the summer.
Despite being 34, Ibrahimovic still has an eye for goal and already has 39 this season albeit in the weaker Ligue 1.
With his time in France up, Zlatan would be seen as a big signing for a number of clubs and has also been linked with a big money move to China but it is thought that he would prefer to stay in Europe.
The Premier League had been touted as a destination with Arsenal and Chelsea being linked with swoop but according to Sky sources, the striker would consider a move to United, but under 1 condition.
It is thought that Zlatan would only head to Manchester if it wasn’t to play under current manager Louis Van Gaal, damning for Van Gaal that a high profile player would take such a stance.
Of course Ibrahimovic and LVG have had their run ins before, with Zlatan admitting he isn’t the Dutch manager’s biggest fan in his autobiography “I Am Zlatan”, going as far as to call the former Ajax manager a ‘pompous ass’.
It is unlikely that the two could coincide at Old Trafford at the same time and whilst most fans would take the striker over Van Gaal, Football Fanzone’s Jason Cundy has called Ibrahimovic’s comments ‘scandalous’ and accused the former Barcelona striker of trying to engineer a move to United:
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has some front coming out with this. Whilst still impressive, he clearly isn’t the player that he was and this smacks of a player looking for a big payday. It’s scandalous that this has come out but unfortunately his words will carry a lot of clout. It looks bad for Louis Van Gaal and with the precarious position he is in, it doesn’t help him.
Apparently he wants £250k a week wherever he goes and lets be honest if United offered it to him with Van Gaal still in charge he would likely take it. But the fact is United haven’t made an offer for him and have made little noise about signing him makes you wonder why he decided to come out with this?
It’s clearly agenda driven as he and Van Gaal don’t get along but what makes him think that United are even interested? His relationship with Jose Mourinho leads me to believe that this is a big angle to engineer a move to United as well as perhaps strengthen Mourinho’s hand in terms of becoming new United manager.
