Cundy: There has to be a place for Fabregas in this Chelsea side

A lot has been made of Cesc Fabregas’ omission from the Chelsea team this season with talk of the Spaniard leaving the club.

Fabregas was one of the star performers as Chelsea won the title the season before last and even last year with the side massively off the boil, he managed 6 goals and 10 assists but this year it seems new manager Antonio Conte doesn’t fancy him and I can kind of see why.

The way this system works he can’t play the 10 role as well as he can deeper. Arsenal fans will say he can and he did at The Emirates but I feel that he operates better with the pitch in front of him, allowing hims to pick his passes, as he was doing for Costa when Chelsea won the title and as he did for Costa in Chelsea’s win over Watford earlier this season with a pitch splitting pass for the striker.

I feel he isn’t as effective with his back to goal, he hasn’t got the pace to get around in that 10 position so has to start in one of the 2 deeper roles. So far Chelsea have operated with Kante sat infront of the back four with a pairing of Matic and Oscar ahead of him but has Cesc done enough to break into that trio? For me he has.

On Wednesday he took his chance against Leicester with 2 goals and I think he showed that he is an able player and that there has to be a place for him in the team given what he brings to the table.

I’d personally start him against Arsenal, pairing him with Oscar with the energetic Kante sat behind them and drop Matic.

But that said it’s Arsenal, against bigger, more physical teams that pairing with Oscar has the chance of getting overran and bullied so it is a case of horses for courses.
