Jose Mourinho to Man United – A Chelsea fan’s perspective

177990642-1454733045-800The appointment of Jose Mourinho is a significant one, previously they hadn’t been able to replace Sir Alex Ferguson with a man who has the personality to cope with the demands of being manager of Manchester United, but this has changed now.

David Moyes quickly found out success at Everton and success at Old Trafford are two hugely different things whilst Louis Van Gaal, despite his superb record abroad, failed to embrace the Premier League.

In Mourinho they have a manager in a similar mould to Sir Alex, with  a passion, a winning mentality, a strong work ethic as well as a desire to get the club back to the top of not only the Premier League but world football.

For Chelsea supporters, can you blame him? He wanted to succeed at Stamford Bridge but circumstances didn’t allow him to do so, and now has been given another crack at it somewhere else.

Nothing lasts forever and I’m sure Chelsea fans would be aware of that; his desire was always to return to the Premier League for the long haul after his spell at Real Madrid, the opportunity to manage United couldn’t be turned down especially with his passion for English football.

No doubt he’ll get the warmest of receptions when he returns to Stamford Bridge, I’m sure Chelsea supporters will be forever grateful for his contribution over the five seasons he spent at the club.  Although his second stint ended earlier than expected, supporters will remember that the players let him down, as well as him maintaining the only way he will leave is if the club sack him, signifying to supporters his love and passion for the club.

Under Sir Alex there was a fear factor, you went to Old Trafford and you knew you were in for a game. Under Moyes and Van Gaal, that has been lost and it will be up to Jose Mourinho to bring that back to the club, he did it at Chelsea and I’m pretty sure he can do it there too.

With all of the honours and awards he’s won throughout his career, the one of the key ingredients that United need from Jose to get back to where they were is his hunger, his obsession to win games of football. It is frightening and will certainly rub off on the United players.

He was able to deliver in his second spell with Chelsea, after a five year wait for the Premier League title he was able to bring us back to the summit of English football as well as reaching the Champions League semi-final the season before. It’s the kind of progress United will be hoping for and with a reported £200m to spend, the United hierarchy will be hoping his appointment can convince the big stars to join the club too.

Appointing Mourinho is a huge statement by United especially with the Premier League shaping up how it has been and  if Mourinho can replicate his Chelsea success at United, it will be a very successful appointment.
