News of a Manchester United move for Jose Fonte has been greeted with confusion and dismay amongst United fans.
The Portuguese defender was impressive the heart of Southampton’s defence 2 seasons ago alongside Toby Alderweireld, and whilst Alderweireld moved on joining last season’s title contenders Tottenham, Fonte remained at St Mary’s.
Aged 32, with his 33rd birthday coming in December, it seemed that Fonte had missed his chance at a move to the big time, but having won the Euros in the summer it seems that he may have one more crack at it.
Fonte is reported the target of a £9m move from Man United although Arsenal and Everton have also been mentioned.
United have brought in the seemingly impressive Eric Bailly and he has looked solid alongside Daley Blind. With Chris Smalling still to return United aren’t doing too badly defensively, but outside that trio then they have the likes of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo to call on, with the pair not looked on favourably by fans as well as being injury prone.
A move for Fonte makes sense given the price and his ability, but do United have an option already in their midsts?
During the summer Jose Mourinho included youngster Axel Tuanzebe in his pre season plans and after his brief display against Wigan was effusive in his praise of the Congolese born, Rochdale raised defender saying:
“You can play 90 minutes or 1 minute. Sometimes 1 minute is enough.
“With Axel, ten minutes is enough! The potential is there, you see it immediately.
“You know him better than me because you know him for a few years but if anyone sees him for the first time, ten minutes is enough to see the potential.”
So why not give the 18 year old a chance? He would be killing two birds with one stone; silencing those who claim he doesn’t give youth a chance as well as helping to develop an already impressive young defender.
Last night as Manchester United’s u23 side took on and beat Leicester, Tuanzebe shone earning praise from all after yet another calm and effortless display:
4 senior Internationals on the pitch tonight & Axel Tuanzebe still looked the best player on the pitch

It’s cheating to play Axel Tuanzebe at this level

And Manchester United themselves were quick to highlight his impressive display too:

Included in the squad for last season’s game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park by former manager Louis Van Gaal, Tuanzebe is clearly a player of immense talent and that is ready to wet his beak in the first team so why hold him back any longer?
It’s time for the teenager to make the permanent step up into the first team.
