Manchester United are reportedly on the brink of signing Paul Pogba and could have inadvertently struck a blow against rivals Arsenal not once, but twice!
United’s move for the French midfielder drags on, reportedly this time as the fee for agent Mino Raiola is to be agreed, and could even open the door for Real Madrid to step in and snap up the former United youth player, but it is United’s intent and interest that has kicked off a series of events that could see Arsenal and Arsene Wenger left red faced.
For their troubles Juventus will reportedly be paid upwards of €100m for Pogba, a sum that a good mathematician (not me!) will tell you is a something percent return on the £800k compensation they paid Manchester United for his services in 2012.
Ever-grumpy ex Man United midfielder (and the reason Pogba left in the first place) Paul Scholes was quick to tell everyone that Pogba isn’t worth the reported €100m fee being touted, but he will be worth every penny is this interesting sequence of events brought about by his transfer takes place.
So United’s move for Pogba will fill the coffers at the Juventus Stadium and whilst not short of a quid (or Euro), the massive fee has reportedly funded a €94m move for Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain.
The Argentine striker was top scorer in Serie A last season with an impressive 36 goals and adding that kind of firepower to an already dominant Juve side should see them reign over Serie A for a further 5 years.
For United the signing of Pogba has dual purpose because Juventus’ signing of Higuain means they can keep the striker out of the clutches of rivals Arsenal.
With Higuain heading to Turin, it leaves a striker sized hole in Napoli’s side and €94m burning a hole in their pocket, so guess who they have opted for? That’s right, another Arsenal target, Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi.
Icardi, famous for stealing the wife of idol Maxi Lopez, is already captain of Inter at the tender age of 23 and isn’t shy in front of goal himself. Inter fans have a motto in regards to the Argentine: “There are three thing guaranteed in life: Death, Taxes and an Icardi goal against Juventus”, so with Juventus taking their star man, what better way to keep up with the Serie A champions than grabbing the man that is seemingly their kryptonite?
Whilst nothing has been confirmed about the deal, it is thought that Napoli are in advanced talks with Icardi who missed Inter’s defeat to PSG due to the move.
So with one swoop, United will have strengthened themselves with the signing of Pogba as well as keeping two top quality strikers out of the clutches of Arsenal.
A complete coincidence, but you can be certain that Man United boss Jose Mourinho will be laughing to himself at throwing a spanner in the works at The Emirates!
