Manchester United fans and football fans in general collectively said “who?” when it was revealed that Manchester United would be signing Monaco forward Anthony Martial for an incredible €50m.
Arsenal fans will know who he is after he helped eliminate them from the Champions League last season but the 19 year old is largely unheralded outside of France leading many to claim that the striker is a panic buy by United.
But even if that is the case, on investigation United could be signing a very good player even if he is a few million quid over priced.
Highly rated in France and just called into the French squad, the 19 year old isn’t the nobody that the papers will have you believe.
Whisper it but he has been tentatively been likened to the younger Thierry Henry and if he goes on to become half of the player the former Arsenal striker was, United fans will be grinning.
And whilst he represents a massive gamble given his price and the fact he hasn’t been tested at the highest level, he clearly has potential and talent.
If you were to describe United’s attack at the moment words like turgid, slow and stale would come to mind and Martial will inject a much needed dose of pace into the team. Memphis Depay has shown in glimpses what unpredictability and pace can do for their attack and Martial would add to this.
And at the most basic level, he can’t be any worse than Wayne Rooney has been this season!
